Afghan Taliban and Pakistan Report Numerous Deaths in Recent Cross-Border Fighting
Fresh hostilities erupted along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border early on Wednesday, with both parties blaming the opposing side of initiating deadly clashes.
Pakistan's military stated that its forces had killed "fifteen to twenty Taliban fighters" and injured numerous others in the Spin Boldak district border district.
A Taliban government spokesman claimed that 12 Afghan civilians had been killed and more than 100 injured by artillery from Pakistan. He added that several military personnel had been lost their lives. None of the reported fatalities could be verified by third parties.
Hostilities between the neighbors has escalated since explosions rocked Afghanistan recently, which the Afghan capital attributed on Islamabad. The Taliban deny claims that it is sheltering armed groups targeting Pakistan.
Online Platforms and Military Confrontations
The opposing forces are not only fighting for the upper hand on the border, but also on social media, trying to persuade the general population that their faction is inflicting greater losses.
The latest fighting follow severe cross-border confrontations over the weekend, when the Afghan forces asserted to have eliminated fifty-eight members of the Islamabad's armed forces and Pakistan said it killed 200 "Taliban and linked terrorists". The reported casualty figures announced by each side could not be confirmed by external sources.
Several days of fragile calm that had persisted since the recent days were shattered on Wednesday.
Local Accounts and Consequences
Footage purportedly of the fighting and its aftermath have been circulated on the internet and on messaging groups, including images claiming to be of those deceased and grainy shots from low-light cameras claiming to be of check posts demolished. These videos have not been authenticated.
A source in Spin Boldak in Afghanistan stated that fighting erupted at around 04:00 local time (11:30 p.m. GMT on Tuesday). Another resident in the district, who lives about one kilometre away from the frontier post, said that "intense clashes continued for almost several hours".
"We observed drones and fighter planes soaring over us, a number of our relatives are injured," they added.
A doctor in one of the hospitals in Spin Boldak reported that he tallied "7 fatalities and 36 injured brought to the medical center", including men, females and children.
The circumstances were "strained" and more victims were being taken to hospital, he said.
Displacement and Global Responses
A regional authority figure in the area stated that "hundreds of households have been forced to flee since the previous evening due to the heavy clashes". He said they were on "high alert" after a few Taliban posts were attacked by Pakistani jets. He added that they had the bodies of 2 armed forces members.
In a distinct overnight clash on the north-western border, the Islamabad's forces claimed that twenty-five to thirty militant and Pakistani Taliban fighters were "believed" to have been killed.
The clashes have led to calls for de-escalation from foreign nations including China and Moscow, as well as a suggestion from the American leader that he could intervene to facilitate peace.
On Wednesday, Richard Bennett, UN special rapporteur on the situation of civil liberties in Afghanistan, wrote on a social media platform that he was "deeply concerned" by accounts of non-combatant deaths and evacuations because of the fighting.
"I urge everyone involved to practice maximum restraint, protect civilians, and abide by global regulations," he stated.
Long-Standing Disputes
Pakistan has for years alleged the Taliban authorities of permitting the Pakistan Taliban to operate from their territory and fight against the Pakistani administration in an effort to enforce a strict religion-based system of governance.
The Taliban leadership has always denied this.
