Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying these medications should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
