No fewer than 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
