The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".
