The United Kingdom and the United States have signed a significant commercial pact that will guarantee no tariffs on British drug shipments being sold in the American market.

Agreement Details of the Accord

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has pledged to boost spending on medicines through the public health system. This pledge ensures that duties on these crucial goods will be held at zero for a period of the next three years.

This deal is in response to previous warnings to hike import taxes on branded drug products, with figures mentioned as high as double the cost.

"This arrangement between the UK reinforces the worldwide climate for new treatments and brings long-overdue equity to transatlantic drug exports," a statement noted.

Trade Importance

Pharmaceuticals represent one of the the United Kingdom's largest exports to the US, which is clearly the primary market for major companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Statistics indicate that in the 12 months leading up to the third quarter, the UK exported medicines valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This figure represented 17.4% of all goods exports in that span.

"This deal safeguards jobs, stimulates funding and paves the way for the UK to establish itself as a global hub for life sciences," a minister remarked.

Detailed NHS Changes

The pact entails several specific changes from the British government:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will increase the affordability limit at which it considers new therapies to be too expensive by a quarter.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a goal to double total public funding on medicines from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6 percent over the following ten-year period.
  • Rebate Cap: The amount drug companies must refund to the NHS to control costs will be limited at fifteen percent. Last year, repayments exceeded 20%.

Industry Background

The deal takes place against a ongoing tension between the sector and the UK government over medicine costs and approval rates.

These tensions were intensified by claims that US consumers were charged a premium for the identical medicines than patients in the other developed nations.

Over the last 18 months, several large drug company projects in the UK have been halted or cancelled, while substantial funding commitments have been pledged toward US facilities.

The Science Minister stated that the NHS had to increase expenditure on medicines, noting that its spending on drugs had shrunk as a percentage of its total funding over the previous ten-year period.
